Simultaneous terrorist attacks in Burkina Faso

In the early hours of Tuesday morning simultaneous attacks targeted police stations in two Northern towns (Baroulé and Tongomayel). These attacks have been claimed by Ansarul Islam, a terrorist group founded in December 2016. This group also claimed the attack on security forces based in Nassoumbou on December 16. In January 2016, terrorism had also hit the Burkina Faso capital, Ouagoudougou.

The border area between Mali and Burkina Faso is the hardest hit by activities of different terrorist groups who pass easily from one State to another.  Kidnapping is made easier due to border permeability.  As a reminder, in January 2016, an Australian couple were abducted in the North of Burkina Faso by AQIM. More recently, on the eve of February 8, a Columbian nun was abducted in Southern Mali, not far away from Burkina Faso’s border.
